All the Countries With Border Walls

They're not just for the U.S.-Mexico border.

National security fears and disputes over refugee crises have fueled a wall-building boom across the globe.

A generation ago, 16 countries had man-made barriers separating their borders. Today, that number has swelled to 65, including Israel's West Bank barrier and India's 2,500-mile fence facing Bangladesh.

Here are ten of the most famous. Click through to see their effectiveness and spread the word by sharing this list:

Although violence between Catholics and Protestants has subsided in recent years, tensions between the two sects persist here.

A series of barriers known as "peace lines" divide portions of Belfast, Derry, Portadown, and other urban centers to minimize contact between  nationalist Catholics, who identify as Irish and Protestants who often self-identify as British.

Fences surround the two Spanish cities in Africa, Ceuta and Melilla.

While the enclaves are claimed by Morocco, the Spanish government regards both cities as their own, having belonged to Spain since before the creation of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Given their proximity to Africa, both cities attract refugees seeking to illegally immigrate to Europe.

The border is cordoned off by an 18-foot-high double fence complete with watchtowers.

Following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, a demilitarized zone (DMZ) has divided the island nation between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides.

The DMZ is commonly referred to as the Green Line. Defenses include barbed-wire fencing, concrete walls, watchtowers, anti-tank ditches, and minefields.

British General Peter Young, commander of the British peace force, a forerunner to the present UN force first proposed establishing a buffer zone to quell ethnic violence.

In response to Europe's migrant crisis and the European Union's indecision, Hungary's right-wing government constructed a 110-mile fence along its border with Serbia and Croatia.

The security measure caused illegal immigration to plummet. The number of illegal entries dropped so rapidly that the fence singlehandedly abolished access to asylum in Hungary.

Its construction was not without opposition. On September 16, 2015, migrants launched a coordinated attack to tear down an especially vulnerable section near Horgoš, Serbia, and Röszke, Hungary.

Hungarian riot police responded with tear gas. However, the migrants surged forward again, only to face more less-lethal weapons.

Undeterred, they flung chunks of concrete and broken glass bottles at law enforcement. Police rushed into the breach with batons, tear gas, and water cannons.

The government had a clear message for its critics and migrants: "The official and legal ways to come to Hungary and therefore to the European Union remain open. That's all we ask from all migrants - that they should comply with international and European law."

The seven-mile wall along the Everos river, a natural barrier between Greece and Turkey is designed to prevent Middle Eastern migrants from entering Greece.

Observers consider the Everos a dividing line between Europe and Asia.

Besides the wall, this section of the border is militarized, a relic of the two countries 1974 conflict over Cyprus.

The Greek military buried 25,000 antipersonnel and anti-tank mines along this same seven-mile stretch. However, minefields are clearly marked.

The new wall to deter illegal immigration is 13 feet high and equipped with night-vision cameras providing a live feed to border patrol.

A 1,700-mile sand berm protects Morocco from the Polisario Front.

Polisario rebels represent the Sahrawi people who long to drive Morocco from Western Sahara.

After years of fighting, the Moroccan government isolated the insurgents, courtesy of a huge berm manned by the army.

Artillery salvos and sniping by the Polisario continue to this day, however, they only control territory east of the wall – almost entirely uninhabited desert.

With ISIS continuing to pose a threat, the Saudi government has beefed up border security, including a 560-mile wall.

Jihadists have already probed the defenses of this highest-profile effort by the monarchy to insulate itself from the rest of the Middle East.

The state-of-the-art barrier includes scores of watchtowers with radar capable of detecting infiltrators from dozens of miles, underground movement sensors, hundreds of rapid response vehicles, and a fiber optic cable directly connected to the Ministry of Interior.

Israel began construction on its West Bank security barrier in 2002 to prevent Palestinian insurgents from committing acts of terror.

Controversy surrounds the wall. While Israel considers it a bulwark against Islamic terrorism, Palestinians decry it as a symbol of segregation.

Israeli authorities erected the barrier during the Second Intifada, which the Palestinians themselves describe as an uprising against the Jewish state.

Palestinian suicide bombings and Israeli's military response inflicted thousands of casualties.

Some – including Yasser Arafat's wife – claim the Palestinian Liberation Organization pre-planned the uprising.

After the wall's construction, suicide bombings dropped from 73 in the West Bank (between 2000 and July 2003) to 12 (from August 2003 to the end of 2006).

Although President Erdoğan claims the Islamic State no longer poses a serious threat, his regime is building a 500-mile wall along its border with Syria to defend against ISIS militants.

The wall will cover Turkey's entire border with Syria. When complete, it will include massive concrete blocks topped with razor wire, hundreds of border towers, and a security road with frequent military patrols.

Its construction is funded in part by the European Union.

The longest entry in our list, India erected a fence along its entire 2,500-mile border with Bangladesh (the fifth longest land border in the world) to minimize illegal immigration and narcotics smuggling.

To further bolster security, India recently installed floodlights throughout the West Bengal sector.
