Boy, does Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) have a deal for you: DACA, in exchange for some border security, but no wall. In short, the bill proposes:  legal status and a path to citizenship for young immigrants who have lived in the U.S. since Dec. 31, 2013; $110 million annual grant for five years to improve coordination between federal and state law enforcement; adding 55 immigration judges annually and staff attorneys for three years; and direct the State Dept. to study the underlying causes of illegal immigration from Central America. Upon hearing the "compromise" omitted wall funding, President Trump shut that down quickly.

The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. McCain, and his Democrat counterpart Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) purports to have 27 Senate supporters and 27 House supporters for a companion bill. Too bad for McCain's merry cadre that Americans already rejected the more amnesty, less security approach in 2005, 2007, 2013 and most recently, in the 2016 presidential election. It seems like President Trump is holding firm, and isn't about to let that happen.

President Trump has a stronger hand than he did going into the shutdown in January because Democrats are already paying in lost support for shutting down the government for illegal immigrants. The president is all too happy to let them have another bite at that apple. McCain, on the other hand, has a short window to posture as the bipartisan savior of a divided Washington. McCain can try, but President Trump has no reason to give in.
