New Yorkers say, "Why isn't there anyone to help us?" Donate to Moms Against Hunger and help us, as first responders, provide sustained relief to Sandy's victims.

Friend,

Today former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani criticized FEMA for their "abysmal" response to Hurricane Sandy. He told one news source that, "It's quite obvious they didn't pre-plan for water, they didn't pre-plan for the generators, they didn't pre-plan for the gasoline."

Mr. Giuliani is right. Right now, a week after the fact, relief efforts in New York and New Jersey remain few and far between, and the efforts that do exist are greatly limited.

Today there are nearly 40,000 people out of housing, and all but 2 million are without power - further, the nighttime temperatures have been in the low thirties.

Hurricane Sandy has truly left New York and New Jersey in a desperate and tragic state: flooded properties, destroyed homes, and multitudes left hungry.

That's why Moms Against Hunger has been on Staten Island since the beginning, providing food for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. That's right: we had boots on the ground in Staten Island before FEMA and the U.S. Marines - we were there as soon as we were allowed in.

And since Sunday we've been able to go further - Moms Against Hunger now has team members in Seaside Heights, already working for relief and providing food. Even better, we will be feeding New York's hungry in Sea Gate by tomorrow.

Here is a picture of Mark, one of our team members, preparing some delicious food on one of our fire-pits in Staten Island:

Will you help us continue to provide beef and chicken meals to the people of New York and New Jersey? Your donation will make a difference and help Moms Against Hunger continue their good work amongst New York's devastated and hungry.

The people of New York and New Jersey are in great need right now, and response teams have been slow at best. FEMA, though present, only responded four days after the fact. What's worse is that they have set up relief stations in practically inaccessible areas - very few people have the means of getting to FEMA stations since nearly all of New York City's fuel is gone; further, if even individuals or families have the means to access a Federal Relief station, they are unwilling to travel far from their residences for fear of looting.

Similarly, the amount of relief provided by the American Red Cross is strikingly limited. As of Sunday, their workers have only been able to provide Sandy's victims with cups of hot cocoa a cookies.

Though FEMA and the Red Cross' efforts are commendable, they are not even close to meeting real needs. Their unpreparedness is becoming more apparent every day.

But the good news is: Moms Against Hunger has boots on the ground right now in New York City. We already have three of our administrators on the scene in Staten Island, actively organizing and training the locals, and providing much-needed relief.

Moms Against Hunger is responding, and we are making a difference. Will you help us?

New York City's more isolated boroughs have yet to see any disaster relief.

The residents of Coney Island are calling their area New York's "Katrina" - the New York

Daily News reports one individual saying:

"Why isn't anyone helping us? We have no food, no power, no heat... we are Katrina."

And the situation on Staten Island is equally alarming. According to the Staten Island Press this week, grocery stores - those that are left standing - have been completely emptied. As families waited for help, no help had reached New York's most isolated borough...

... until Moms arrived.

Moms Against Hunger is responding, and we are making a difference. As first responders, we have boots on the ground where Federal Government workers and the Red Cross are not. Will you help us in our efforts?

While FEMA is currently stuck in their bureaucratic process, and the Red Cross is handing out cups of hot chocolate, Moms Against Hunger is on the scene with a half a ton of meat! That's right: we have driven our trucks filled with over one-thousand pounds of beef and chicken to Staten Island and have set-up our Texas-style barbecue pits to bring hearty, delicious food to the hungry.

We are proud to have the resources available and teams capable of meeting needs that other groups aren't able to.

But we need your help: will you donate to our New Jersey/New York Mission today? Will you help bring food to the New Jersey and New York's cold, hungry, and now-homeless residents?

Please donate today. There are many mouths to feed, and as long as our finances allow we will provide the food.

Our goal is to be in New York and New Jersey for the coming weeks. We want to continue to not only feed, but train the local communities and partner with other local ministries and grassroots relief efforts.

As I noted above, we are in Seaside Height now and are organizing teams to prepare fire-cooked meals for those in Sea Gate tomorrow.

Please donate today to help us with the costs of feeding the shocked and ruined families in New York and New Jersey.

With compassion,

Dr. Gayla Holley, Moms Against Hunger
