Nigel Farage continues:
“There aren’t just one or two flash points, there are hundreds of flash points at which people are going out and smashing down doors, looting, setting fire to buildings and you literally, this morning, have millions of decent, law abiding Londoners who are very, very frightened indeed. And we have a government who are mostly on holiday, who appear not to have a clue what to do.
I just feel that we’ve got to get a grip pretty quickly and whilst it may sound a radical thing to do, the police aren’t big enough to cope and I think what the British government needs to do is to call in the army pretty damn quickly. Let’s put soldiers on the street, let’s give people a feeling that they can’t just run riot everywhere and allow the police to actually get on with their job.
I am saying that it’s that bad, I am saying that millions of people are terrified. I am saying that we have looting and arson going on, on a scale that we have never seen in this country before. Unless we get a grip, tonight could be even worse than last night and it’s surely only a matter of time before a building gets set fire that’s got twenty or fifty people in it and they’ll all die.
My instincts are always libertarian, my instincts are always let people get on and live their lives. This is one of those rare circumstances where the innocent genuinely need some protection and I think if there are soldiers on the streets....
“...I think the chances of gangs going and smashing in windows will be greatly diminished.
What we must do is stop the riot, what we must do is stop the spread because my fear is that there are people watching this who will see that at the moment there appears to be virtually no consequences for going out and setting fire to things and for looting. The British government must send, today, send a very strong message or God only knows where this may go.”
When asked about the extraordinary action in the gold market Farage responded, “Well I spent twenty years as a commodity broker and trader and I dealt with precious metals...If you ask me where would I want my money to be, in gold and silver or in bank shares, I think I know what the answer is (gold and silver). I suspect that we haven’t seen the worst yet. I think that all that happened in 2008 is that we deferred the banking crisis, it’s now coming back to bite.
It is not impossible that gold could double again from here. It is not impossible, the Western World’s finances are in the most horrifying mess. Our banking industry has been allowed to get completely out of control. We’ve got a Eurozone crisis that is far from over and if I was long gold, I would stay long gold.”
When asked if people have lost trust in the West in their governments Farage replied, “They haven’t got trust in the governments, they haven’t got trust in the banks, they haven’t got trust in their own currencies and we’re witnessing a massive shift in power from West to East in the world, aided and abetted by appalling governments in the West. Difficult to say exactly which way things will go, but they are going to get worse, a lot worse before they get better.”
