Why We Seek War: Why is America in so Many Wars?

America is “a nation that seeks war” and if it doesn’t change it could end up destroying itself, a law school dean warns.   Given all the wars the United States has waged, “It is preposterous but true that we do not see ourselves as a nation that seeks war,” writes Lawrence Velvel, dean of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. “We see ourselves as a peace loving nation” and that message is constantly drummed into the public by government and media.   Since World War Two, an indisputably necessary conflict, Velvel points out the U.S.. » read more

Corporations Sponsor Wolf-Killing "Derbies": Take Action to Stop Them

How much is a wolf’s life worth? Three points -- according to Idaho’s misleadingly named Sportsmen for Wildlife, who recently held three “predator derbies,” competitions where contestants vied to see who can kill the most wolves and other animals over a two-day period. Urge corporate sponsors of these brutal wolf-killing competitions to withdraw their support right now. Sign our petition today. Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse -- two major outdoor retailers -- sponsored the derbies, with the entry fees for these brutal competitions funneled to support anti-wolf lawyers and lobbyists working to keep wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the northern Rockies off the endangered species list… and squarely in the crosshairs of those who would do them harm. Urge Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse to withdraw their support for wolf-killing derbies.. » read more

Ever Expanding Wars: An Appalling New Year Certainty

Dec. 28, 2009 A message repeatedly making the rounds on the Internet shows a picture of an American airman, John Gebhardt, holding an injured Iraqi child on his lap and the accompanying text explains about his sympathetic provision of comfort to her and others. [1] In addition, the reason that it is all the rage, especially amongst neoconservatives, is that the senders can, in their minds, use the depiction to "prove" that U.S. military personnel undeniably have magnanimous intentions.. » read more

South African Communist Party Gives Peace Prize to Venezuelan President

Dec. 18, 2009 Mérida, December 18th 2009 (Venezuelanalysis.com) – The South African Communist Party SACP gave its highest award, the Chris Hani Peace Prize, to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez this week in recognition of Chavez’s leadership in the worldwide struggle against imperialism and for socialism. Chavez was chosen to receive the award because he is “a principal fighter in the anti-imperialist struggle, the Bolivarian Revolution, and for his commitment to the struggle for the peace, solidarity, and socialism of the working class,” said SACP General Secretary Blade Nzimande. Nzimande presented the award to Venezuelan Ambassador to South Africa Antonio Montilla during a SACP conference in Polokwane, South Africa.. » read more

Marine Mom Makes Contact at Army Recruitment Center

Dec. 17, 2009   For the last year or so I have been watching the construction of a new "Army Career Center" located a block from my office in downtown Manhattan. Once a week I would pass it and it was always closed and covered with brown paper on the big plate glass windows. It is located in an ideal spot, of course, because the military hires consultants to make sure they get prime real estate to suck up the youth.  Today the Army Career Center had its grand opening,a gala event that packed the center.. » read more

Gravel’s Lament: Fighting Another Dumb War (with video)

December 14, 2009 "Truthdig" -- I have spent enough time inside the American military to have tasted its dark brutality, frequent incompetence and profligate ability to waste human lives and taxpayer dollars. The deviousness and stupidity of generals, the absurdity of most war plans and the pathological addiction to violence—which is the only language most who command our armed forces are able to understand—make the American military the gravest threat to our anemic democracy, especially as we head toward economic collapse. Barack Obama, who is as mesmerized by the red, white and blue bunting draped around our vast killing machine as the press, the two main political parties and our entertainment industry, will not halt our doomed imperial projects or renege on the $1 trillion in defense-related spending that is hollowing out the country from the inside. A plague of unchecked militarism has seeped outward from the Pentagon since the end of World War II and is now sucking our marrow dry. It is a familiar disease in imperial empires.. » read more

The Peace Prize War

Obama is George W. Bush with a higher IQ and a better vocabulary Dec. 4, 2009   The American information bubble prevents the populace from recognizing the world around it. Iran's leader, constantly demonized in the “bubble,” “is not a pariah everywhere on earth, no matter how much American press and politicians fume and fuss.” It becomes increasingly clear that the United States is fooling no one but its own citizens, who are victimized by their ignorance.. » read more
