STOP FOOD SAFETY BILL S 510 - TIME IS GETTING SHORT !!

The latest rumor is that the Senate will try to pass their dangerous "food safety" bill (S.510) with a "unanimous consent agreement." That means the bill will pass UNLESS a Senator decides to object by placing a "hold."

If a hold is placed on the bill, the Senate will have to debate it if they want it passed. That's the one thing Senate leaders don't want. Too many other bills, including pressing budget bills, are on their agenda before the session expires.

This is good news for supporters of small farms and health freedom. The Senate has heard our objections before. If we can embolden just one Senator to do the right thing and place a hold on this bill, it could be derailed and killed.

And so we ask that you please tell your Senators to put a "hold" on S.510 and oppose the bill using DownsizeDC.org's Freedom to Farm Campaign.

I am cc'ing my Representative so that he knows how important this issue is to me.

I heard that the Senate might try to pass S.510, the bogus "food safety" bill, via unanimous consent. I demand that you stop this by placing a "hold" on the bill and opposing it.

There are a number of reasons to oppose S.510 . . .

* It is unconstitutional: The Commerce Clause applies only to goods crossing state lines, not to local production and distribution

* It is unnecessary: If the food supply really was in crisis, it would have been Congress's #1 priority from the beginning of 2009

* Family farms and small businesses have NEVER been at fault for major foodborne illness outbreaks, but they will not be adequately protected from burdensome and costly new regulations

* Section 106 allows for incompetence and cover-ups, by allowing food-related government reports to be classified under the banner of "national security"

* Instead of putting the interests of the American people first, S. 510 seeks to "harmonize" U.S. policy with the international Codex Alimentarius and the World Trade Organization - a backdoor means to world government

S.510 will likely make it impossible for smaller producers to compete, and will reduce the choices of consumers. When ALL of our food is produced and distributed by large corporations, we will more likely see MORE dangerous outbreaks reaching more people. If you really want food safety, you should advance legislation that enhances freedom and diversification.
