Sydney Watson: I Don’t Trust the Media and Neither Should You

Political commentator Sydney Watson is back to share her thoughts on why she doesn’t trust the media.
Among the myriad reasons is the explosion of hate crime hoaxes in the Trump-era. Given that the “Orange Man Bad” theory of causation has infected every newsroom in the country, reporters have tossed journalistic ethics aside to breathlessly cover hate crimes that are “obviously” the president’s fault.
When these stories collapse like a house of cards, the same “objective” journalists are often MIA, and those few who report on the developments lack the fervent zeal they displayed when they reveled in the thought of hurting President Trump’s electoral prospects.
The phenomenon is the latest example of confirmation bias in this hyperpartisan era. We have seen it manifest time and again, from Jussie Smollett claiming two Trump supporters assaulted him in downtown Chicago on the coldest night in years to the church organist who spray-painted a swastika and pro-Trump messages on their church.
Another recent example came from a black middle schooler at a Christian school where Karen Pence, Vice President Mike Pence’s wife, teaches.
The student alleged that three white boys had cut off her dreadlocks, reminding many of the haunting photographs of Nazis humiliating Jewish men by cutting their beards in the street.
The problem: it was all a hoax.
