President Donald Trump inserted himself into the exploding national abortion debate just before midnight Saturday, calling himself "strongly Pro-Life" in a several tweets while appearing to challenge key provisions of strict abortion laws recently passed in Republican-controlled states.

"As most people know, and for those who would like to know, I am strongly Pro-Life, with the three exceptions - Rape, Incest and protecting the Life of the mother - the same position taken by Ronald Reagan," Trump said on Twitter.

Trump's comments come just days after Alabama passed a near-total abortion ban, now the most restrictive law in the nation. Unlike other laws restricting abortion, the Alabama law does not make any execptions for instances of rape or incest.

Meanwhile, Republican governors in Georgia and Missouri have signed their own restrictive measures to curb abortions, and Louisiana's Democratic governor signaled he soon will do the same.

Earlier Saturday, the White House also seemed to be signaling Trump's opposition to some of the elements in the laws.

2020 campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany, during an appearance on MSNBC on Saturday, said she disagreed with Alabama’s decision not to allow exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape and incest.

“You know, I personally am for the exceptions,” McEnany said. “The president has been clear since the last campaign he’s for exceptions for rape and incest and life of the mother.”

McEnany added that “he’s said repeatedly he’s for those three exceptions.”

But this is the first time Trump himself has publicly commented on the abortion laws after making the issue of late-term abortions a key part of his State of the Union address month ago.

In speeches before both chambers of Congress, the president repeatedly criticized efforts in Virginia and New York that would allow women to terminate nonviable pregnancies after 24 weeks.

Trump seems to have come out against the lack of exceptions that have caused some conservatives, like televangelist Pat Robertson, criticize the measure as going "too far."

Trump called for Republicans to unite around the issue as candidates in the Democratic primary denounced the new laws and turned the restrictive measures into a campaign issue.

"If we are foolish and do not stay UNITED as one, all of our hard fought gains for Life can, and will, rapidly disappear," Trump said in a tweet.
