Military Copters Fly Low Over Denver
CBS
Military helicopters flew low over parts of Denver Monday evening in a training exercise. Authorities said it was designed to prepare for a possible terrorist attack.
Many people called CBS4 to report the activity and ask what was going on. Many more called 911 because they didn't know what was happening.
The department of defense claims it's simply a joint training exercise with local police and fire planned years ago to improve operations in populated areas.
"If we scared anybody in our training evolution that's going on, we deeply apologize for that," Lt. Steve Ruh with the Department of Defense said. "That is not our intentions at all."
The division said the training had nothing to do with this summer's Democratic National Convention in Denver.
"This exercise that we're doing has nothing at all to do with the Democratic National Convention. It just happens to be a coincidence," Ruh said.
CBS4 pilot Mike Silva, who just returned from service in Iraq, was amused at the Department of Defense saying the training has nothing to do with the August convention.
"When they say this is not related to the DNC, this is routine training, you say what? I say it does snow in Colorado, there are mountains over here. The DNC is coming to Colorado in Denver in August, and this is part of the planning," Silva said.
The command said the exercise will be taking place at certain times, mostly in the evening, in the city for the rest of the week.
The spokesman said similar training has been going on in other cities as well.
