Flake: "This country is being ripped apart here. We've got to make sure that we do due diligence."

Sen. Jeff Flake just spoke for a few minutes to explain what it was he is trying to accomplish. We'll let him speak for himself.

Here's Flake, in his own words:

I'm simply stating the discussion that we had between us all is that I would hope and I think we had some agreement before that the Democrats who have been -- I think -- justifiably uncomfortable moving ahead, could publicly, in an effort to bring this country together, say that we would feel better.... I'm not expecting them to vote yes... but not to complain that an FBI investigation has not occurred. This is what I'm trying to do. This country is being ripped apart here. We've got to make sure that we do due diligence.

BREAKING: Flake calls for delay of Kavanaugh vote to allow for FBI investigation

Sen. Jeff Flake just said he would vote to move Judge Brett Kavanaugh out of the Judiciary Committee and to the floor of the Senate as long as the main vote would be delayed by up to one week to allow for an FBI investigation.

Protesters are cramming into Sen. Susan Collins' office in Portland, Maine

Maine Public Radio's Susan Sharon tells CNN that there are so many protesters in and out of Republican's Senator Susan Colllins' office in Portland, Maine, that's there's not enough room to move -- even in the hall.

Serious conversations about additional FBI investigation are underway

From CNN's Dana Bash

Serious conversations are underway about how and whether a brief additional investigation could be done by the FBI and a vote delayed by no more than a week, CNN has learned.

We'll bring you more as we get it.

These are active discussions with Jeff Flake — but we still don't know much about them

From CNN's Dana Bash and Manu Raju

A behind-the-scenes drama is playing out with the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Two sources said the members of the committee are having private discussions in the ante room, which is a room attached to the hearing room.

It is unclear what they are discussing and it’s unclear if Sen. Jeff Flake has had a change of heart.

A source involved says “active discussions” with Flake are underway but still unclear where they are going.

It's time to vote. But Jeff Flake is still in the back room.

From CNN's Manu Raju and Phil Mattingly

The vote was supposed to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET. But that's not happening.

What we know about the delay: Not much.

But here's what we've observed: Republican Sen. Jeff Flake disappeared to a back room with Democratic Sen. Chris Coons about 45 minutes ago and several other Democrats then joined them. Republicans have been cycling in and out of the room.

Sens. Grassley and Feinstein were speaking quietly. Sens. Sasse and Whitehouse were speaking quietly, too.

Several Republican members were seen huddling a few minutes ago, and Grassley was called back to talk to Flake.

Note: This would not be happening if there wasn’t something under discussion. What we don’t know is if it’s significant or not.

Judiciary Committee moments away from Kavanaugh vote

The Senate Judiciary Committee is once again the scene of a national drama Friday as its members prepare to vote on President Donald Trump's embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The Judiciary Committee vote is set for 1:30 p.m. ET. The panel has 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

Friday's vote follows a wrenching, partisan hearing Thursday where Christine Blasey Ford detailed her sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh and he vehemently denied them. It sets into motion days of high drama on Capitol Hill, with the prospect of a conservative Supreme Court for a generation in the balance.

The committee action will be the first step in a series of votes to determine whether conservatives lock in a 5-4 majority on the court. After the committee votes, the GOP's current plan is to hold a procedural vote on the Senate floor midday Saturday and hold the final vote early next week.

So, where's Jeff Flake?

From CNN's Manu Raju

Sen. Jeff Flake's been gone for more than 30 minutes after leaving with his friend Democratic Sen. Chris Coons, as we reported below.

At one point during Flake's absence, Coons returned, whispered to Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s staff director, causing quite a bit of chatter on the Democratic side.

Feinstein and Coons then went to the anteroom with Feinstein's staff director. It’s unclear if Flake will return to speak, since Grassley seems eager to take a break.

Note: We don't know what any of this means, we should say. It could be nothing -- but it’s noticeable.
