My friend and I reached the King County Courthouse in Seattle at appoximately 10:15 PM PDT -- just in time for the court in which we needed to file the forma pauperis for indigent status to go into recess for fifteen minutes!
We also found out that Monday mornings are the very worst time to show up in court; in contrast to later in the week mid-afternoon when we first went last week, the court this morning was packed.
I gave my information to the court clerk, and we waited for the judge to summon me to the bench. The first thing she told me was that I as a woman needed to remove my ever-present hat in a show of respect to the court. She remarked drily that cultural norms had evidently changed since the last time I had been in a court.
"As have, obviously, the rules of the court," I retorted with an ironic smile.
Although she seemed at first receptive to my filing as an indigent, this suddenly changed when she saw I was suing the governor of Washington and three members of her executive cabinet.
Then, despite the merits and intent of my case, she stated that I would have to pay the full $230 if I were going to file in King County, or spend several more hours trying my luck with the forma pauperis in Thurston County, where the state capital of Olympia is located.
She also confiscated my forma pauperis that I had dutifully filled out, and one of the two precious copies of the complaint that I had printed out for her own records.
I made it a point to tip my hat -- making certain that it did not touch the crown of my head in her courtroom -- bow slightly to this exalted personage, and thank her for her judicial acuity as we walked out the door of the courtroom as a further sign of my respect for the court and its obviously impartial, uncorrupted wisdom.
After we went to the courthouse law library to make another copy of the complaint to replace the one that had been officially purloined, I spoke with my friend in the lobby, and he agreed that, with the time element, pressure and the significance of the case we needed to file today here in King County, he was willing to fork over the $230 official extortion fee for us to be able to exercise our constitutional rights.
As we were on our way over to my friend's bank machine on the bus, we ran into a good friend, a long-time political activist and martial arts expert, who had just had an opportunity to train back east with federal law enforcement officers in crowd control, infiltration, disblement and other repressive techniques, so that he can train other activists as to what we may soon expect from the federal government that is here to help us. We decided to have lunch with him to learn more and schedule another meeting with him next week.
We then went to my friend's bank machine to get the money, and headed back to the office of the clerk of court. Both of the deputy clerks we talked to were immediately galvanized when I told them the nature of the complaint, and wanted more information about our network, for which I gave them appropriate websites. They also told us they wanted to follow the case online, which they as court employees can easily do, and keep their friends and families abreast. They cordially wished us good luck with this case as we departed, myself much relieved to have this momentously maniacal monkey off my back!
The case was officially filed a 1:57 PM PDT and its Case File No. is 09-2-30453-0 SEA.
Any one who cannot physically go to the King County Courthouse will need to pay a $0.15
official extortion fee to read and follow the case online at:
