UK riot act reform to hurt businesses: Insurers

A UK plan to reform the Riot Damages Act will take a heavy toll on potential business owners as well as those damaged during times of unrest, experts warn.

Government reforms on the 1886 Riot Damages Act could result in a huge fall in payouts to business owners and leave most drivers unable to claim compensation after any future unrest, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently said.

“The review of the Riot Damages Act is overdue, but government proposals to drastically cut back compensation are at odds with its intention to retain the principle that the state is responsible for the costs of riot damage, that has proved its worth for taxpayers for over 100 years,” said Huw Evans, deputy director general at the ABI.

The new rules would stop payment to non-insured companies having a turnover of more than £2 million. It would also stop reimbursing any insurers, as well as compensation for loss of business.

“We urge the government to ensure that changes to the act strengthen the tried-and-tested approach, not leave some of our most vulnerable communities without support and place them at greater financial risk,” Evans added.

Experts say the proposal may prevent companies from opening shops and businesses in high-risk areas, like Tottenham.

“It was right to review the Riot Damages Act but doing so should not be an excuse to make it harder for businesses and homeowners to claim compensation in the case of a riot,” said Tottenham MP David Lammy.

The death of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man, by the London police triggered the London riots.

A public inquest held earlier this year declared that Tottenham police gunned down Duggan lawfully. Jurors ruled in January that Duggan was lawfully killed despite being unarmed at the moment a police officer shot him dead.

Please view the first link below to my old article on the coming war or economic crisis and the expected riots. This should help you understand why the UK Government is doing this. There will be so many riot issues that it would be so costly to the government. Rather than looking at Iran we can now focus more on the Russian Federation and the BRICS Development Bank.
