Rising Tide for Impeachment

Smaller Font Larger Font RSS 2.0

We did it!  Our Declare Independence! project, combined with all the like-minded groups like Veterans For Peace, ImpeachBush.org, AfterDowningStreet.org and many others supporting Dennis Kucinich's call for impeachment, created a very real rising energy of 'let's get it done' that was palpable during the six hours of testimony today July 25, 2008 in the US House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary.

I watched nearly the entire six hours of testimony and discussion in the US House Judiciary Committee today on internet C-Span.  I was impressed and uplifted by the overwhelming support from the two panels of speakers.  The first panel comprised members of Congress, Kucinich among them.  The second panel included nine highly credible former Congress members, well-known prosecutors, former members of previous administrations, and constitutional scholars, many of whom have written books on the subject under discussion.  Only two of the second panel were seemingly anti-impeachment or trying to sidestep the issue.  All the others had very impassioned and clear statements in favor of impeachment.

The Q&A session after the panel statements was excellent I thought, in educating the Judiciary Committee in a little-used topic of how to do impeachment and how to define an impeachable offense, and how little is necessary given the three resolutions of impeachment that have been forwarded to the Judiciary Committee (all by Kucinich-Vice President Cheney, 35 articles against Bush and the latest single article against the Bush Administration).  It was stated several times by different members of the committee and the panel that no real time is needed to conduct impeachment hearings and should definitely be done without delay.

For someone like me watching this long session where everyone was intensely speaking or listening, in a serious and yet relaxed mood, it was an education in good government.  It was also clear that it was an education for the Committee members in attendance.  It was much like a debate, with the Republicans trying their darndest to put their best argument forward in a reasoned manner, but the overwhelming feeling of the totality was the inevitability of impeachment.

So let us see these 40 Judiciary Committee members stand up with courage and declare independence by crafting an article of impeachment that the majority can agree on and voting it onto the floor of the US House of Representatives for a vote.  The air of the session today was thick with that possibility, in my opinion.  We know that our Declare Independence! project contributed to that energy and we can continue to forward our declarations and letters to the members, to Speaker Pelosi to newspapers and blogs to maintain this momentum.

Please keep up your great work and maintain this energy we started!  As Kucinich said when asked how we can help, "Practice freedom every day."  We say, Declare Independence! every day.
