Cells topped with barbed wire to be used to hold protesters rounded up in mass arrests August 15, 2008 A CBS news crew has uncovered a huge warehouse holding facility in Denver, consisting of steel cages topped with barbed wire, ready to receive thousands of protesters at this year's Democratic National Convention. "This is a building filled with metal holding cells," described CBS reporter Rick Sallinger. "We showed up at the facility unannounced today, the doors were wide open, and we managed to shoot for several minutes until a Denver sheriff's captain asked us to leave." The warehouse is located on the north-east side of Denver and is owned by the city. It appears that officials wanted to keep it a secret until the convention began.. » read more
The Sublime Rise of a Standing Army in America
July 2008 Idaho Observer Spirit Lake, Idaho, has about 1,600 residents and one flashing yellow traffic light. It has three cops. One is an older, slightly overweight man under six feet tall who has been around for a long time; he looks and acts how you would expect a police officer from a small, relatively quiet north Idaho town to look and act. The other two, recent arrivals (one with the last name "Lawless"), are large, muscular men dressed in black paramilitary garb complete with kevlar vests and combat boots. Their demeanor is noteably more menacing and intimidating.. » read more

Posted 8/13/08 ÉTTIENE DE LA BOÈCE I serve you not, if you I follow, Shadowlike, o'er hill and hollow; And bend my fancy to your leading, All too nimble for my treading. When the pilgimage is done, And we've the landscape overrun, I am bitter, vacant, thwarted, And your heart is unsupported. Vainly valiant, you have missed The manhood that should yours resist, - Its complement; but if I could, In severe or cordial mood, Lead you rightly to my altar, Where the wisest Muses falter, And worship that world-warming spark, Which dazzles me in midnight dark, Equalising small and large, While the soul it doth surcharge, Till the poor is wealthy grown, And the hermit is never alone, - The traveller and the road seem one With the errand to be done, - That were a man and lover's part, That were Freedom's whitest chart. - Ralph Waldo Emerson (c. 1833) Brief Biography of Éttiene de la Boétie (The modern French pronunciation of "La Boétie" is "La Bo-ay-see.. » read more

Chertoff: I'm Listening to the Internet (Not in a Bad Way)
August 6, 2008 Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff sat down with Threat Level on Monday in Silicon Valley to talk about laptop searches at the border, the government's new-found interest in computer security, and the continuing saga of overeager terrorist watch lists. Among the revelations: It seems blog comments inspired him to propose a laptop-tracking application for those who had their computers seized at the border. He also explained why watch-list mismatches are the airlines' fault, and why the government is too secret. Wired.com: There have been quite a few security czars over the years, but sometime last year, cybersecurity became important.. » read more
