e house made a loud cracking sound. I was already in motion to soothe my birds and try to remedy the situation. Birds are extremely sensitive to vibration and it is said that they can feel a snake climbing up the tree that they perch in.

I live practically on the epicenter of that quake, near Brown Avenue and Deer Hill in Lafayette. My birds made me aware of the event seconds before it happened which, at least, had me up and moving. Most people felt this earthquake and could then go back to bed or whatever. I, on the other hand, had a fitful night with a flock of parrots that felt every single little aftershock whether I did or not!

As a side note, I remember before the Loma Prieta quake my mother remarking how the koi in our garden pond stayed at the bottom of their world when she had gone out to feed them. Very unusual on that warm afternoon. Premonition?

Don't we all wish animals could talk? Mine do! However they didn't use their words to warn me of the quake, they used their behavior!
