Norwegian Glaciers Shrinking
aciologist who wrote her doctoral thesis on the glacier, told Aftenposten.
'The glacier is now clearly divided in two. Less than 10 years ago it was completely joined there at the bottom,' she said.
Andreassen works for the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate. The agency says every glacier in the country is retreating.
Another group, RegClim, predicts that Norway, which has 1,600 glaciers, could be left with about 30 in a few hundred years if current warming trends continue. Andreassen disputes that, arguing that if there is more precipitation in high areas some glaciers might hold their own or even grow.
The issue is a critical one for Norway because much of the country`s electricity is hydropower and glacial runoff is critical to many of the dammed rivers.
