New Earthquake 'Swarm' Hits Cascadia Subduction
August 28, 2008 For reason's still unknown, a new swarm of earthquakes have hit within the Cascasia Subduction Zone. This series occurred just off the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Scientists believe the next Cascadia earthquake will be one of the largest on the planet measuring up to a 9.0 magnitude. The evidence of the great temblor 300 years ago was discovered along the coast of Washington and Oregon by Brian Atwater, a U.. » read more
Chili Volcano -- Thunder and LIghtning
August 27, 2008 Recently a volcano that had been dormant for 9,000 years near the coast of Chile erupted spectacularly, hurling liquified metals and lightning many miles into the sky. The results, which you see here, are called a "dirty thunderstorm" and are quite rare. Nobody is certain what causes them, but according to National Geographic it's believed to be "the result of rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in the plume colliding to produce static charges - just as ice particles collide to create charge in regular thunderstorms." PHOTOS: Huge Greenland Glacier Disintegrating
August 22, 2008—Greenland's glaciers are breaking up at a worrisome pace, new satellite images show. A gigantic, 11-square-mile (29-square-kilometer) chunk of the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland broke off between July 10 and July 24. The collapsed section is comparable in size to half of Manhattan Island (see the breakup in three images above). Petermann covers 500 square miles (1,295 square kilometers). Tiy Aleutian Island has Big Impact
August 14, 2008 An island smaller than Alaska's largest airport has frustrated thousands of people trying to get into or out of Alaska. Kasatochi volcano is one of three volcanoes rumbling in the central Aleutians in August 2008, along with Mount Cleveland and Okmok. The former crater lake on Kasatochi Island in the Aleutians. Island overall shot created by Dave Schneider, copyright Digital Globe. Kasatochi, about 80 miles northeast of Adak island in the central Aleutian chain, has spewed an ash cloud that twisted eastward over the North Pacific, scattering planes and canceling flights because pilots know that flying a jet through an ash cloud can cause engines to seize.. » read more
Volcanoes Triggering Volcanoes?
Auugst 13, 2008 There's lots of volcanic action in the Aleutians arc at the moment, with three volcanoes: Okmok. Cleveland, and Kastochi, all erupting at various points in the last month or so. The Volcanism Blog and the Eruptions blog have both been keeping us up to date with the waxing and waning of these eruptions. However, given my past interest in possible seismic triggering of volcanic eruptions, it's possibly no surprise that I've been wondering whether the near-simultaneous eruption of three volcanoes in the same geographic region is entirely a coincidence. Could the eruption of one have triggered the others? Note that this triggering does not involve causing a completely inactive volcano to suddenly reactivate; it's more about pushing a volcano that is already building up to an eruption over the threshold a little earlier than it would have done otherwise.. » read more
Anak Krakatau erupts 120 times on Monday
August 12, 2008 Serang, (ANTARA News) - Mt Anak Krakatau in the Sunda strait had 120 eruptions and quakes throughout Monday, prompting the Volcanological and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centger to declare the volcano and its surroundings in level-2 alert status. "Even now the volcano is still spewing red-hot lava and thick smoke," monitoring personnel in Pasuruan village, Cinangka subdistrict, Serang regency, said. However, the frequency of the eruptions and quakes had been declining compared to those in the last two days. For the time being, unless the volcano`s activities picked up, the area are safe for tourists, but only in a radius of one kilometer form the center of the eruptions.(*) www.. » read more
