How We Went From $42,000 to $6,500 and Live To tell About It !
Posted Jan. 3, 2008 As a middle class American, it's been difficult for me to understand how we are supposed to make a living when there are so many things working against us. How can we go on day after day with the rising cost of food, fuel, utilities, car insurance, taxes and health care, while dealing with the insecurity of unemployment? In the past, whenever I considered these things, I felt a hopeless sense of impending doom in the pit of my stomach. There is so much talk about how to solve these issues, but nothing ever seems to stop the downward spiral of struggle and stress that millions of folks are experiencing. Like many working people, my life went along fine during the 1980s.. » read more
Thune Pushes Back on EPA "Cattle Tax"
Dec. 30, 2008 Senator Thune recently introduced legislation that would halt efforts by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to tightly regulate livestock greenhouse gas emissions. Thune's bill would clarify that greenhouse gas emissions from livestock cannot be regulated by the EPA under the Clean Air Act. In 1999, an environmental group sued the EPA to force the regulation of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. In 2007, the Supreme Court ruled that the EPA had to include carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act.. » read more
The Food Industry Challenges That Obama Needs to Address
Dec. 27, 2008 esident-elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of Agriculture could be perhaps the most important clue as to whether Obama really intends to bring change to Washington. It will determine whether or not he plans to take on one of the most powerful lobbies in the country, the businessmen who turned agriculture into agribusiness. Current farm policy was called by Time magazine, "a welfare program for the megafarms that use the most fuel, water and pesticides; emit the most greenhouse gases; grow the most fattening crops; hire the most illegals; and depopulate rural America." An online movement has sprung up calling on President-elect Obama to name anti-agribusiness crusader Michael Pollan Secretary of Agriculture.. » read more
Today is the Most TERRIBLE Day in the History of Farming
December 17, 2008 at 04:41:06 No, I am not referring to Obama selecting Vilsack for the USDA though it is a blatant betrayal not only of his promise of sustainable agriculture but of "change" and "grassroots" anything. Vilsack is a Monsanto lackey http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_15573.cfm and the hand of the Clintons is heavy in this.. » read more
A Cheap Shot at Workers
Dec. 15, 2008 The Bush administration is doing a last-minute overhaul of the visa program for temporary farmworkers to make it easier to hire foreigners over Americans, to lower workers’ wages and to erode their rights. You would think that after failing for eight years to fix immigration, the administration would pack it in rather than make one last listless stab at a solution. But this plan isn’t even that — it’s just midnight meanness, right in time for the holidays. The Labor Department’s proposed changes to the H-2A visa program, which would take effect in January, are supposed to help both growers and workers by making hiring cheaper and speedier.. » read more

Soil Not Oil: Why We Need to Kick Petroleum Out of Our Farms
December 3, 2008. Biodiverse farms offer us more food, better food, higher incomes for farmers and a defense from climate disasters. The following is an excerpt from Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis by Vandana Shiva (South End Press, 2008). The industrialized, globalized food system is based on oil. It is under threat because of the inevitability of "peak oil.. » read more
Who Will Be the Next Secretary of Agriculture?
----- Original Message ----- From: patrick mcgean To: patrick bellringer Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2008 10:36 AM Subject: Who will be the next Sec of Agriculture? Patrick I am forwarding this message to you. The question of the next Sec of Agriculture has not wound your clock to date but possibly this email to John Hammell of IAHF may produce a belief that we learn and grow from adversity. We as a nation of the world, must exert our influence on something other than the delights of the Fortune 500 corporations. If we believe our constitution contains the rudiments of global freedom, life liberty and the pursuit of happiness; then speak up for your health, demand organic foods. No more chemicals no more poisons, just food.. » read more
